Imagine over 20,000 people around the U.S. dropping everything on the same day to engage with local nonprofits and make an impact that matters to the communities in which they live and work. On June 10th, Deloitte member firms did just that with their annual Impact Day, a national day of service and celebration of their year-round commitment to volunteerism. Here in New York City, our Junior Board member and Deloitte consultant, Omar Njie, initiated a partnership so that one of our schools, PS 188/The Island School, could host an Impact Day for 23 enthusiastic young professional volunteers. High School Students: Apply for Summer Apprenticeships Today!

The application deadline has been extended for ExpandED Options summer apprenticeships! ExpandED Options offers rising 10th and 11th graders a chance to earn a credit learning a skill and how to teach that skill to younger kids. Students will work with artists, filmmakers and engineers. Teens who complete the program will earn a paid job teaching after school in the fall of 2016. Read full post

Dear Rashida, My 10-year-old son goes to school in a gentrifying neighborhood. We like most things about the school, including its free afterschool program. But recently, a group of parents decided to start their own afterschool program, which charges a considerable fee. With the cooperation of the principal, the new program offers foreign language, ballet, chess and piano to children whose parents can afford the fees. It seems to me that afterschool should be where all kids come together and have equal opportunities to experience new things. But we now have two programs in the same building, side-by-side: one for “rich” parents and one for poorer parents. Read full post
