Mott Haven Academy Charter School is the first school in the city designed to serve children who are in the foster care and child welfare systems. Two-thirds of the students are in foster care or are under the care of the Administration for Children’s Services. The New York Foundling, a social service agency, founded the school in 2008.

Mott Haven Academy Charter School is one of the first 10 public schools in New York City to expand the school day through the ELT/NYC initiative, a pilot program to expand kids’ learning time by at least 30 percent. TASC manages the initiative in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and Department of Youth and Community Development.
