In the fragmented and difficult-to-navigate universe of after-school, TASC is a central source for supporting and sustaining programs, advising policymakers and strengthening the field. As an intermediary organization, we offer a depth of expertise to after-school providers, and connect programs with funders and policymakers. We build quality, accountability and sustainability into programs in the following ways:

  • TASC developed a program model that provides kids with activities that make them want to attend, blending academics with enrichments. TASC gives providers a core set of quality elements to build on, but also the flexibility to create programs that match the ages, needs and interests of the kids and families they serve.
  • TASC requires programs to serve large numbers of students (typically 150 to 300). Based on research findings which confirm that the more kids come to programs, the more they benefit, TASC set rigorous standards for programs to enroll students and require daily attendance.
  • TASC supports its programs not just with funds but with materials and curriculum, and with opportunities for programs to adopt cultural institutions as partners. Throughout the school year TASC provides technical assistance, monitoring and evaluation.
  • TASC is pioneering the work of professionalizing the staff of after-school programs, most of whom work part-time. In addition to providing staff members with comprehensive training and professional development opportunities, TASC is working through The Center for After-School Excellence to provide staff members with access to college courses and professional certification.
  • TASC has helped to build collegial networks at every level of after-school programming, from the executive directors of community-based organizations to the most junior front line staff members. TASC hosts frequent events where peers can learn from each other's successes and collaborate on meeting challenges.
  • TASC works with lawmakers, educators, corporations and foundations to build coalitions, advocate for the importance of after-school, and ensure that quality, availability and sustainability remain the driving principles.
