You can pack a lot of learning, joy and discovery into a three-hour, daily after-school program. In 1998, TASC created a model comprehensive program that offers kids in grades K-through-8 an inspiring variety of experiences - artistic, scientific, athletic, culinary – and academic support. Our goal was to create a critical mass of quality programs that would lead public officials to accept responsibility for providing after-school to all kids who need it or would benefit.

Original TASC-model after-school programs meet until 6 every day school is in session, allowing parents to work full days. TASC funds, monitors and supports such programs for thousands of New York City kids every year. They are operated by community-based organizations inside city schools. We provide staff with training, help programs secure funding and provide technical assistance with functions such as recruiting and managing budgets. We connect kids and programs with the city’s great cultural institutions, and offer enrichments in such critical areas as hands-on science, literacy and service-learning.

Original TASC model programs, rooted in research and evaluation, are scaled to serve large numbers of kids at a cost of about $1,700 per child, providing a model for replication through public funding. Programs meet these additional key criteria:

  • They offer snack or supper
  • They have low student-to-staff ratios of ten-to-one in elementary school
  • They have a diverse staff of teachers, artists, college students, parents and other community members
  • Each employs a full-time, paid site coordinator
  • They offer a variety of activities connected to but distinct from what’s offered during the school day, including academic support, arts, sports and community service
