Esther Dyson

Esther Dyson, Honoree

Esther Dyson is a journalist and commentator on emerging digital technology, a philanthropist and an entrepreneur through EDventure Holdings.

Her most recent projects include Way to Wellville, the first project of HICCup.co (Health Initiative Coordinating Council), a contest to create and measure the impact of broad community-wide health-production programs.

Dyson explores, invests in, and writes about new space, health and IT start-ups and technologies. Her Board seats include 23andMe, Eventful, Luxoft, Meetup, PA Consulting, Personal Inc., Voxiva, XCOR, WPP Group, Yandex, Long Now Foundation, Sunlight Foundation, Personal Genome Project, WEF Global Agenda Council on Fostering Entrepreneurship, and ExpandED Schools.

Dyson received her A.B. from Harvard University and completion certificate from the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.

Ted Mathas
Ted Mathas, Honoree

Ted Mathas is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of New York Life Insurance Company, the nation’s largest mutual life insurer with more than $500 billion in assets under management. The core business includes life insurance, retirement income, investment management, and long-term care insurance. New York Life is the leading provider of life insurance and income annuities in the U.S.

Mr. Mathas has been a director of the company since July 2006. He became Chief Executive Officer on July 1, 2008, and was named Chairman of the Board of Directors on June 1, 2009. Mr. Mathas previously held the title of President from 2007 until 2015.

Mr. Mathas is a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance, a group of state legislators and regulators, insurance executives, academics and consumer advocates that advises the Federal Insurance Office of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Financial Services Roundtable, and on the boards of the American Council of Life Insurers, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Partnership for New York City.

Mr. Mathas graduated with an A.B. from Stanford University, with distinction, in 1989. He received a J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1992, where he was a member of the Virginia Law Review and the Order of the Coif. 

Laura Overdeck
Laura Overdeck, Honoree

Laura Overdeck is the Founder of Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that helps young kids learn to love math so they will excel at it. Laura is creator of its zany nightly online math problems, three Bedtime Math books (Macmillan), and Crazy 8s, an unprecedented recreational after-school math club.

A Princeton astrophysics alumna and Wharton M.B.A., Laura chairs Overdeck Family Foundation, which supports STEM education reform.

She also serves on the boards of Liberty Science Center (Vice Chair), Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, Governor's School of New Jersey, Science Friday, and the President's Advisory Council at Princeton University.

Soledad O'BrienSoledad O'Brien, Master of Ceremonies

Soledad O'Brien is founder and CEO of Starfish Media Group, a multi-platform media production and distribution company. Through SMG, O'Brien reports for HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” She also hosts the National Geographic Bee and produces reports and documentaries for CNN, Al Jazeera, and NBC.

Earlier in her career, O’Brien co-anchored “Weekend Today” and contributed to the “Today” show and “NBC Nightly News.” In 2003, O’Brien became the face of CNN’s morning news shows and a go-to breaking news anchor. There, she won three Emmys, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the Alfred I DuPont Award, among others.

O’Brien is also a speaker and critically acclaimed author of "The Next Big Story.” Along with her husband, she created the Soledad O’Brien & Brad Raymond Starfish Foundation to help disadvantaged young women get to and through college.

O'Brien is a Harvard University graduate and member of the ExpandED Schools Leadership Council.
